چکیده

Biology 321 This article reflects important themes that we will explore in this course: • The value of studying model organisms • The molecular basis of allelic variation and how it affects phenotype • In complex traits, allelic variation in more than one gene underlies phenotypic variation • Allele frequencies vary with the population under consideration • The genetic control of many traits is not yet fully understood • The complicated & confusing business of gene names. Genes are often named for the phenotype produced by a mutation in the gene: the golden mutation in zebrafish defined the golden gene; the equivalent gene in humans, though, was named for the protein it specifies: SLC24A5 = solute carrier family 24, member 5. ********************** GENETICS: Science 310: 1754 2005 Zebrafish Researchers Hook Gene for Human Skin Color Michael Balter People come in many different hues, from black to brown to white and shades in between. The chief determinant of skin color is the pigment melanin, which protects against ultraviolet rays and is found in cellular organelles called melanosomes. But the genetics behind this spectrum of skin colors have remained enigmatic. Now, on page 1782 of this week's (12/16/05) issue of Science, an international team reports the identification of a zebrafish pigmentation gene and its human counterpart, which apparently accounts for a significant part of the difference between African and European skin tones. One variant of the gene seems to have undergone strong natural selection for lighter skin in Europeans.

Identification of the first Transgenic Aquatic Animal in Iran by PCR-Based Method and Protein Analysis

In the recent years, there is evidence of training a red type of zebrafish which differs from wild-type in body color. There is not any document how it reaches to the ornamental fish farms of Iran but at first, it was a doubt it belongs to a morphotype or genetic modification (GM). First of all, a set primer was designed to validate zebrafish species. Mitochondrial 16srDNA was selected and ampl...

Skin color in fish and humans: impacts on science and society.

As genetic model systems, fish have played a key role in our understanding of a wide range of biological processes, including vertebrate pigmentation. In this review, we focus on one aspect of pigmentation, skin pigmentation, which has been of momentous importance in human history. Two fish models, medaka and zebrafish, played important roles in demystifying skin color and, by extension, the co...

Association of rs12913832 in the HERC2 Gene Affecting Human Iris Color Variation

Introduction: Human eye colour as a physical trait is based on the developmental biology and genetic determinants of the structure known as the iris, which is part of the uveal tract of the eye. Prediction of human visible characteristics (EVCs) by genotyping informative SNPs in DNA as biological witness opens up a new avenue in the forensic genetic. Variation of iris color rely on the amounts...

Human skin color is influenced by an intergenic DNA polymorphism regulating transcription of the nearby BNC2 pigmentation gene.

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) found to be statistically significant when associated with human diseases, and other phenotypes are most often located in non-coding regions of the genome. One example is rs10765819 located in the first intron of the BNC2 gene previously associated with (saturation of) human skin color. Here, we demonstrate that a nearby intergenic SNP (rs12350739) in high...

Conserved function of medaka pink-eyed dilution in melanin synthesis and its divergent transcriptional regulation in gonads among vertebrates.

Medaka is emerging as a model organism for the study of vertebrate development and genetics, and its effectiveness in forward genetics should prove equal to that of zebrafish. Here, we identify by positional cloning a gene responsible for the medaka i-3 albino mutant. i-3 larvae have weakly tyrosinase-positive cells but lack strongly positive and dendritic cells, suggesting loss of fully differ...
